Turn and face the strange!
Well, you might have noticed that I have had a bit of a rebrand and that my style is flowing in slightly different direction. I had been feeling for a while that my logo across social media was a bit dark and as much as I loved it, I no longer felt as connected to it. After all, my work is pretty colourful and I needed something that was more aligned with my work. This year has been really exciting in terms of playing with my IPad Pro and Apple Pencil, which have enabled me to streamline my designs in a way that wasn't possible before. When I worked on my book Glitter and Earth: Tales of Magic and Wonder, I was in a very experimental phase. I'd just discovered Procreate and I went through the brush selection, playing with everything. I also used my finger to draw with, which was okay, but meant that I couldn't do fine lines as my finger obscured the drawing slightly. By using the pencil I am now able to control lines much more and so I have been having a lot of fun refining my work. It's interesting working out my new style as I am now making much more deliberate choices. I use a much smaller selection of brushes which has resulted in a more consistent style. This doesn't mean that it's going to stay like that forever, but for now it suits my mind set. This more careful and detailed approach is something that I try to maintain in my everyday life. I firmly believe that how you do one thing is how you do everything and so my art and my life are one. It doesn't always happen, but I find that if I don't give things my full attention then I experience anxiety afterwards. I am left with the worry that I haven't done something properly and I feel the need to go back and check. So it's important to me that I go down to pixel level and get things so I am happy with them. That doesn't mean perfect as I think that imperfection has beauty too, it just means that I take due care. I have a slightly unusual vantage of the world as I like to study consciousness and remove myself from conventional media. I don't watch TV and I don't watch the news. Obviously I am not immune to what is going on in the world as I still talk to people and discover stuff on the internet, but I prefer to go within and discover what is true for myself, rather than bouncing off and reacting to fear and politics. My art and my positivity are the most powerful things that I have and I believe that by focusing and sharing the good and magic that I feel, I will be able to leave a positive ripple in the world. And you thought I was just about fairies, hey? Just as I have developed and grown as a person, so has my art, making each creation a snapshot frozen in time. It's exciting to wonder where my art will be in the years to come, but I hope that it will inspire and spread fleeting moments of happiness. And I hope that you will continue to accompany me on my magical journey. I'd love to know your thoughts on my current style. (I hope you like it!)
