The unicorn and the star

Star makes a unicorn friend out of a cloud. This my first 'spot' illustration and I wanted Star to be magical and ethereal in this picture.

I am currently working on illustrating my own picture book. The story is about a star that watches the amazing things happening on the earth and wants to be part of it. Unfortunately, when she makes it down to the earth, children run away from her and she feels lonelier than she did when she was in the sky. She follows her joy though and finally finds her star tribe!

The story is written and I have done some rough (REALLY ROUGH) thumbnails. This gives me an idea of how the pages flow together and how much text is on each page. I'm using an app called Book Creator at this stage as I like to get a feel for things before the serious design starts!

i'm also just playing around with Star's character at the moment and beginning to see glimpses of her world.

This is a more solid and adventurous looking Star. I feel that this would be quite a commercial book as she would appeal to kids, but I'm not sure if I want to do a whole book in this style.

I want to carry on playing with ideas and develop her star world a bit more.

I have learned so much about visual storytelling through SVSlearn.com and since I illustrated 'The Shopkeeper's Apology' - I really want to make this a beautiful book!

I think the idea that you should follow your heart and not to worry about being a bit different is a good lesson to learn!
